Nightstand
Books featured in this post without spoilers:
Perfume by Patrick Suskind
The Girls In The Cabin by Caleb Stephens
The nightstand – The commode. Before indoor plumbing, nightstands used to be called commodes; cabinets that stored chamber pots, so people didn’t have to go outside to pee in the middle of the night.
Mine holds better things now.
I love the little spot beside my bed. Uncluttered and highly functional, holding tools needed for my quiet-time hobbies (reading & writing).
Portable lamp: Can’t read or write without light, neatly anyway.
Books/Kindle: I do most of my reading early in the morning and in the evening before bed. Every night I choose a book for the nightstand. Sometimes one, two or three. On this night, I have two books with me, (more if you count all the ones on my kindle, god I love that thing):
1. Perfume (1985) by Patrick Suskind – Literary & historical fiction | Psychological thriller. An 18th century man born in Paris possesses an unparalleled sense of smell. I won’t be the one to tell you what he does with this uncanny ability. I’ve read 12 chapters and I’m enjoying it so far. The main character is quite interesting despite the fact he hasn’t said one single word in the 63 pages I’ve read.
2. The Girls In The Cabin (2023) by Caleb Stephens – Horror | Thriller.
Holy mother of all cows! I read it in less than 24 hours. Couldn’t put it down because there was continuous movement, something was always happening. Stephens is not afraid to cut deep and let his characters bleed, I had to say a few prayers for all of them. This book offers more than just an intriguing plot; there are layers and complexity and a great twist. This is the first book I’ve read from Stephens. I’m waiting for his other book to be delivered called, You’ll Never Know. It won’t be here for a couple of days and that’s fine because it gives me time to sit with this book a little longer and write this review…on my laptop, beside my nightstand.
Laptop. For reading and writing projects only, no work.
My everything journal. For thoughts, notes, ideas and plans. I try to always have a notebook on me because thoughts and ideas are like shooting stars.
Next to my nightstand, evenings and mornings – I reflect on life or a book, sometimes both. I journal, read, annotate, take notes and write blog posts.
I love this little spot beside my bed. The humble commode that keeps my quiet-time hobbies within reach.
What’s on your nightstand? And as always, what books are you reading?
